Electrical system operators must maintain a continuous balance between generation (supply) and load (demand). This balance has typically been maintained by adjusting generation. Electricity System Control Centres are generally equipped with an Automatic Generation Control (AGC) system that monitors system operations and sends control signals to generating stations to maintain the required balance. Many operators believe it makes sense that the electrical system of the future will use highly responsive loads to provide this same system balance. This is called Load Based Regulation (LBR). Sempa Power has developed the Ancillary Services Network that maintains the required balance by selecting Resource Partners that are connected to the Ancillary Services Network and activating them when required. These sites are large energy consumers that are highly responsive, sustainable, flexible and scalable and are providing a form of System Regulation. This approach to System Regulation has many benefits to the Resource Partner and to the system operator.
