Sempa is led by Ron Dizy. A veteran of high-growth technology companies, Mr. Dizy most recently served as a partner at Celtic House Venture Partners, one of Canada's leading venture capital firms. Prior to joining Celtic House, Mr. Dizy served as a portfolio manager in the venture capital group at the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and co-founded Altera Systems, a consulting firm focused on business applications of artificial intelligence.
Malcolm Metcalfe LVO, P. Eng Founder, Chief Technical Officer
Malcolm Metcalfe is a Professional Engineer with almost forty years of experience in energy and related systems. Malcolm attended UBC between 1963 and 1970, graduating with Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering, the latter specialized in Power Systems.
Malcolm worked in a variety of management positions for BC Hydro, Shell Canada and CP/Canadian Airlines. In 1999, he set up a consulting business and later was a founder of Sempa, where he is currently the CTO.
Malcolm was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List for 1999 and was inducted as a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in October 1999.
Ken Scott Chief Financial Officer
Ken brings two decades of experience in fund raising, investing in startups and operating new ventures. He is currently active as Director and Chairman of the Board of Teraxion Inc., a successful optical component company based in Quebec City. Prior to this, as co-founder and Chief Financial Officer of Metconnex Inc., Ken raised over $10 million of venture funding from cross-border investors and grew the company from four to fifty employees.
Ken began his career at Burns Fry, where he gained significant experience in debt and equity origination, initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions. In 1999 he joined JDS Uniphase, where he led in-house M&A activities and was responsible for JDSU's venture capital portfolio. Ken's passion for angel investing stems from his exposure to the startup world as an intermediary, an investor and a business founder.
Ken holds a Bachelor of Arts from Queens University with concentrations in English Literature and Computing Science, and an MBA from York University.
Alana Safran Controller
Alana Safran joined Sempa Power in 2010 as Controller, bringing impressive educational credentials and many corporate successes. Alana has a proven track record of identifying opportunities to optimize processes, reduce excess costs and add value to both the top and bottom lines of an organization. Prior to joining Sempa Power, she earned positions of increasing responsibility as the Director of Finance & Administration at Benecaid Health Benefit Solutions, and as part of the accounting teams at Morneau Sobeco and GGFL.
Alana has received her Bachelor of Arts, followed by a Masters of Accounting from the University of Waterloo, and was soon after certified as a Chartered Accountant.
Carlos Silva Executive Vice President, Operations
Carlos is the Executive Vice President of Operations in charge of developing and implementing Sempa's hybrid heating solution, overseeing engineering, procurement, construction and customer service. He draws on extensive experience as an operations executive, most recently as Director of Operations with Biorem Technology and as Global Sourcing Manager with GE Water Technologies among others.
Carlos has a proven track record in building motivated teams and effective processes aligned with business strategy, objectives and values.
He received his BA degree in Architectural Technology at Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology in Hamilton, Ontario.
Omar Alghabra VP of Market Development
As Sempa Power's VP of Market Development, Omar is responsible for increasing market share by forging and cultivating strong ties with ISOs. He is also closely involved in the company's regulatory affairs and government relations.
Omar is a Professional Engineer with over 15 years of experience in business development strategy, marketing and communications, government relations and business management in technology and energy sectors. Prior to joining Sempa, Omar spent 7 years with General Electric where he rapidly rose through the ranks, played a major role in accelerating the company's growth and was designated as Top Talent employee.
Omar holds an MBA from York University and a BA in Mechanical Engineering from Ryerson Polytechnic University. He was also elected as a Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Erindale riding between January 2006 and October 2008.
Todd Sankey Director, Software Development and IT
In his role as Director of Software Development for Sempa, Todd is responsible for translating the corporate product goals into a successful software engineering program. This includes planning, building, and managing the software team while working closely with the rest of the senior management. By building an optimizing software engineering process, and leading the software architecture activities, Todd is insuring that the software produced at Sempa is best in class.
Previously, Todd was a founder and CTO at Dyaptive Systems, a company offering unique and powerful performance measurement products for the wireless telecommunications industry. Prior to that, Todd led software product teams at Philips Semiconductor and Honeywell. Todd has also co-authored several patents.
He received his Bachelor and Master of Applied Science in Engineering Physics from the University of British Columbia.
Chris Witney Director, Sales & Marketing
Chris is responsible for sales and integrated marketing management of Sempa’s multi-faceted green technology solutions. He is also responsible for product development, sales tool design and external marketing/distribution management.
Before joining Sempa Power, Chris worked with TELUS Communications, his roles including Solutions Marketing Manager, Account Manager and Client Solutions Engineer among others.
Chris specialized in Strategic Leadership at the University of British Columbia, Sauder School of Business and received Business Management and Internetworking & IP Technologies degrees from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
Gavin Hume Vice President, Technical Services
Gavin Hume joined Sempa with eight years of experience in the building automation industry. He is a LEED Accredited Professional responsible for all aspects of project pricing, contract management and hybrid heating implementation. At ESC Gavin worked in a variety of positions in their Vancouver office including Project/Sales Manager for the Whistler Howe Sound region. He brings technical expertise in Direct Digital Controls and building mechanical systems, as well as business development and management.
