ENBALA Power - Independent Electricity System Operators
Independent System Operators (ISO) and Regional Transmission Organizations (RTO) are responsible for the operation and reliability of the electricity grid. The ISOs provide:
- Reliable and resilient matching of supply to demand
- Efficient dispatch of generation supply
- Providing platforms for efficient and transparent energy markets
ISO procure Ancillary Services to support the reliable operation of the transmission system as it maintains equilibrium between supply and demand on the grid.
Traditionally, ISOs have depended on quick responding generators (such as gas fired turbines or hydro electric plants) to provide most of the ancillary services they require. Increasingly, ISOs are seeking alternatives as the needs of the electricity system evolve and change. These changes include:
- The addition of significant quantities of intermittent renewable power generators creates substantially more complex firming and system regulation requirements.
- Strain on transmission systems creates the need for systems that can be more responsive to both generation and demand side shocks to the system.
- Nodal pricing can create temporary but disruptive pricing anomalies.
Another Tool For The System operator
ENBALA operates a smart grid platform that aggregates available, but varying, flexibility in demand side assets and carefully modulates them in real time to provide highly responsive, resilient and robust ancillary services to the electricity system operator.
The ENBALA Power Network manages the way electrical equipment uses power, giving the electricity system operator new ways to balance and provide quality to the electricity system. Instead of adjusting generation to match minute by minute changes in demand, the ENBALA Power Network adjusts demand so that generation can be operated at optimal levels and efficiency.
Benefits to ISOs
- An additional source of reliable, very high quality and cost competitive Regulation Service
- Ideal platform to help integrate additional intermittent renewable generation into the grid
- Highly resilient and adaptable smart grid platform with extensibility to other ancillary services
- Lowered greenhouse gas emissions through more efficient operation of generators
