With fluctuation in daily energy demands, commercial buildings are challenged to run at optimum efficiency. The variable nature of weather, season, and occupancy don’t allow a consistent and efficient delivery of heat - in fact, it’s quite the opposite. As the building’s energy requirements change over time, the central heating infrastructure is forced to cycle on and off to satisfy these changing requirements, which are often short term and therefore inefficient.
For example, when temperatures drop, a building’s boiler will respond to raise the temperature of a heating loop or domestic hot water supply. The time required to raise the temperature to the setpoint may be short, resulting in a short cycle. Boiler efficiency during short cycles can be less than 50%. That means for every dollar of fuel purchased, only fifty cents worth of heat (or less) is delivered. At times this inefficiency can become expensive; boilers often cycle 40-50 times per day.
